Since the 2019/20 & 2020/21 competition seasons were cancelled due to COVID-19, the 2021/22 season will be a bit different. Read on to learn more.

Dance competitions are a way to stimulate and encourage personal growth and help children excel in something they enjoy, as well as giving a sense of achievement. Competitive dance is a popular sport in which competitors perform dances in several dance disciplines, including acro, ballet, jazz, hip-hop, lyrical, musical theatre, and tap.  Competitors perform before a group of judges at different out-of-town competition production companies and may compete as groups or in solos, duets or trios.  Our competitive dancers train throughout the dance season to develop and improve their technique, strength and performance.

At RMAD, we are proud to provide the opportunity for a variety of ages to excel and grow in this higher level of dance education and competition. The RMAD Competition Team is sponsored by an incredible list of local businesses and organizations which have also contributed to more students being able to join the Comp Team.

For the 2021/22 season, all 2020/21 Comp Team members are invited back. Dancers who were not part of the team last season who are interested in joining the team simply need to contact us before December 4, 2021, to let us know what styles you are interested in competing in and we will advise on the next best steps for your dancer based on what’s available.

It is important that everyone who accepts the team offer can commit to attending all competitions. Please visit the Comp Locations further down this page for dates and locations.

2021/22 Competition Team

Our Competition Team will begin focusing on choreo in December. Some dances may be scheduling earlier during “open studio” time during Session 1 - more details to come.

We will be adding new choreography, will look to see what we want to keep that the didn’t get to compete with last season and what we want to modify.

Competition students must also attend the separate weekly scheduled recreational classes for each dance style they are competing in (excluding Hip Hop, Lyrical, Musical Theatre, Open or Contemporary, as there are no weekly classes for those styles). This ensures their technique is being developed and allows for the comp rehearsal time to focus on choreography. Click here for more details on this season’s recreational classes.

Competition rehearsal class times will be organized after September 30th. Stay tuned. These classes may adjust based on the needs of each class - we aim to provide as much notice as possible should changes need to be made.

There is no cost for comp rehearsal classes - they are included in the Comp Team Fee.

Mini Competition Group

Our Mini Comp group is for dancers aged 4 or 5 that demonstrate the ability and interest in competition-level rehearsal and performance on stage. This group will compete in two different dance disciplines, Ballet & Jazz, as they are the fundamentals for growing dancers! Mini Comp students must be 4 years old by December 31 this year and must also be in Mini Movers or Ballet and Jazz Pre Jr (depending on their age), where they will focus more on technique which will support the choreography in Mini Comp.

Rehearsal schedule to be determined. During class, instructors will be working closely with your little one to get them ready for the big stage! The class will provide an opportunity for a quick warm up, and practicing their dances unattended. It’s also an opportunity to further strengthen technique with a typically smaller class size.

Being part of the Comp Team at this young age has many benefits, outside of dance. It teaches your little one about being in front of a big, supportive audience and learning the ins and outs of proper and respectful backstage behaviour. Competition is an exciting new experience for most kids and this is a great way to get your little ready for future years of performing, whether in dance, school, public speaking and more.

Comp Team Costs

Any additional funds raised by the Parent Committee will be applied as credits to your account. We highly encourage all comp families to be active in all fundraising efforts to help raise funds throughout the season.

These costs are IN ADDITION to the weekly recreational Technique & Choreo Jazz, Tap, Ballet and/or Acro classes. Payment options are available. Click here for full details and pick the option that works best for your family.

  • $500 +tax Comp Team Fee: This fee is per student and is due in full by December 31, 2021. It includes membership to the team and the additional Comp Rehearsal Classes that will be scheduled.

  • $150 Volunteer Commitment fee: This fee is per family and can be earned back. You do not pay the Recreational fee - just one. Click here for full details.

  • Costume, Tights & Footwear Fees: Costumes and tights will be invoiced upon order and vary per outfit based on the suppliers’ current costs. Footwear costs are not included and are the responsibility of the families. Required styles will be communicated once costume selections are completed.

  • Competition Registration/Entry Fees:

    • Returning 2020/21 team members have already paid the entry fees that each competition charges. As each competition has carried over these paid fees as credits to the 2021 dates there are no new fees this season.

    • New team members: Will be invoiced separately and are passed on directly to the competitions. These fees must be paid in full by January 31, 2022 as they are then paid to the competitions to secure the new dancer’s spot.

  • Comp Apparel Package: Each comp team member requires this package and will be invoiced upon order. Cost varies per outfit based on the suppliers’ current costs and fundraising.

    • Package will include one black jacket and one pair of pants, branded as the RMAD Competition Team.

    • Apparel package is to be brought to each comp. Dancers are to wear this while at Comps, when not performing or when on stage for Adjudications.

    • Students are responsible for the care of their outfit. If it is damaged, they will need to replace it before attending any competitions to ensure the best representation.

    • Price may be less if a sponsor is secured and final cost will be due at a later date. Fee must be paid in full before collecting the package and before the first competition.

    • Returning Comp Students will not need to purchase a new package if their outfit still fits.
