Dance competitions are a way to stimulate and encourage personal growth and help children excel in something they enjoy, as well as giving a sense of achievement. Competitive dance is a popular sport in which competitors perform dances in several dance disciplines, including acro, ballet, jazz, hip-hop, lyrical, musical theatre, and tap.  Competitors perform before a group of judges at different out-of-town competition production companies and may compete as groups or in solos, duets or trios.  Our competitive dancers train throughout the dance season to develop and improve their technique, strength and performance.

At RMAD, we are proud to provide the opportunity for a variety of ages to excel and grow in this higher level of dance education and competition. The RMAD Competition Team is sponsored by an incredible list of local businesses and organizations which have also contributed to more students being able to join the Comp Team.

2023/24 Competition Team

For Competition students in Jazz, Ballet, Tap or Acro comp numbers, they must also register and attend the separate weekly scheduled equivalent technique class for each dance style they are competing in (no exclusions). This ensures their technique is being developed and allows for the comp rehearsal class time to focus on choreography. If a student is not in a comp ballet or jazz, they must still attend either the technique ballet or jazz class, as they are the foundations of dance. Click here for more details on this season’s technique classes.

For the 2023/24 season, all 2022/23 Comp Team members are invited back! Simply select the comp groups when registering for recreational classes. If you would like to discuss the options further, please contact us.

Dancers who were not part of the team last season who are interested in joining the team simply need to contact us before September 1, 2023, to let us know what styles you are interested in competing in and we will advise on the next best steps for your dancer based on what’s available and their experience.

It is important that everyone who accepts the team offer can commit to attending all classes, the showcase and competitions.

Mini Competition Group

Our Mini Comp group is for dancers aged 4 or 5 that demonstrate the ability and interest in competition-level rehearsal and performance on stage. This group will compete in two different dance disciplines, Ballet & Jazz, as they are the fundamentals for growing dancers! Mini Comp students must be 4 years old by December 31 this year and must also be in Mini Movers or Ballet and Jazz Pre Jr (depending on their age), where they will focus more on technique which will support the choreography in Mini Comp.

During comp class, instructors will be working closely with your little one to get them ready for the big stage! The class will provide an opportunity for a quick warm up, and practicing their dances unattended. It’s also an opportunity to further strengthen technique with a typically smaller class size.

Being part of the Comp Team at this young age has many benefits, outside of dance. It teaches your little one about being in front of a big, supportive audience and learning the ins and outs of proper and respectful backstage behaviour. Competition is an exciting new experience for most kids and this is a great way to get your little ready for future years of performing, whether in dance, school, public speaking and more.
